About Kids Teeth
When do teeth start to erupt ?
What about teething ?
When should I start brushing ?
- On average kids teeth start to erupt at about 6 months of age. There is however a wide variation in eruption times.
- We recommend the first dental visit at 6 months of age and we will be happy to discuss your individual child's needs.
What about teething ?
- When babies are teething, they may become fussy, sleepless and irritable, lose their appetite or drool more than usual. Diarrhea, rashes and a fever are not normal for a teething baby. If your baby has a fever or diarrhea while teething or continues to be cranky and uncomfortable, call your doctor.
- Babies may get sore or tender gums when their teeth cut their gums. Gently rubbing your child’s gums with a clean finger, a small, cool spoon or a cool washrag can soothe them. A clean teething ring may also help.
- Don't use topical numbing agents or teething tablets unless specifically advised. All topical medications are absorbed in your child's bloodstream and may have serious side effects
When should I start brushing ?
- We recommend to get your child used to daily oral hygiene at a very young age. At the 6 month exam I recommend to wipe the mouth clean twice a day with a cool clean washrag and massage the gums. Once teeth erupt you can start brushing with a toothbrush.
- Usually it is safe to use a small amount of fluoride toothpaste after the age of 2 years. In younger children I would generally advise to use a training toothpaste without fluoride. (check out the video on this page it has some good brushing tips)
